Up and Away: phase 1: seagull centric cafe design and a bird learning centre and phase 2: a tall aviary in Pomona Street, Liverpool

Up and Away

Inspired by the overwhelming sound of seagulls which surrounded the site on my visit, I wanted to incorporate seagulls into the first part of my project, a cafe which was environmentally conscious in its design. And through lots of iterations and contemplating on how to make the building more environmental, I decided on creating an intricately designed roof with seagull shaped sculptures almost diving into the roof “The Birds” style into a piezoelectric system, generating electricity through pressure. My phase 2 project, a community centre, continued to celebrate the ornithological inspiration behind the cafe, as I designed a bird research and learning centre, aimed towards children from the adjacent primary school and university students studying zoology and ornithology to visit, attracted by a large tall spiral aviary which can be circulated, a feature that is heightened in the design, emphasising the theme of escalation, aviation and education.
