Toxteth Youth and Community Centre
The Toxteth Youth and Community Centre is a hub for activity, performance, and social events, incorporating a variety of different ages and interests within the community and bringing them together in one space. The dynamic building spills out onto the street, producing an inviting environment for the community and encouraging people to interact with the building and its activities. The key functions of the building are expressed in its exterior, through a series of cantilevers and projected elements, which also help to define the landscape. The entrance on Berkley Street engages with the Greek Orthodox church and leads into a public café, which spills outside and interacts with the performance spaces. The two main cantilevering elements extend onto Berkley Street and Upper Stanhope Street, and contain an art studio for creatives, and a sports hall, which also provides a direct view of the church. These cantilevers define the landscape, splitting it into key sections for the community: a café space, a performance space, a skatepark, an outdoor sports pitch and natural landscaping. Another function which is defined in the exterior is the climbing wall tower, which projects vertically and provides an exciting, active space. The different functions work together to provide a creative, active, and communal environment within the building and in the areas surrounding.
