L.8 Skate and Create
The brief was to design a youth centre for teenagers in the heart of Toxteth, Liverpool. My approach to this was to make the building interactive, allowing users to cycle/skate freely into indoor spaces. This cycle path has been diverted along the whole urban block and in front of the centre. The route along the atrium allows users to access the skate park safely located away from any roads behind the building.
The whole project aims to tackle low mental health associated with teenagers in the area, with the building split into four zones. The zones were inspired by the NHS’s four recommended steps: Connecting with others, Mindfulness, Physical Activity and Learning new skills.
The lattice timber roof structure is taken from the historical church windows seen opposite the site. This angled line is taken down from the roof structure, into the second and first floor plans, down into the urban context. The green funnelled floor on the site plan aims at enticing users into the youth centre off the streets.
The building is part of a larger master plan of the urban block, including the semester one live/work project.
