Rakoczi Boarding School of Performing Arts
|The concept of the project revolves around the idea that a city is a performance, an experience of images. A city is not a physical structure; it comes into existence through people’s views and understandings. Main goal was to rejuvenate the existing ‘performance’ of Budapest, by identifying and enhancing a challenging area. Rakoczi Street was selected as it is currently an area totally neglected by pedestrians while being one of the most arterial roads in Budapest.|
A Boarding School for Performing Arts was proposed, a building that combines an unconventional learning environment, living spaces and performance/exhibition spaces for the public in contemplation of attracting more pedestrians to the street.
An existing concrete structure that remained at the same frozen state for 10 years was selected for the purposes of the school as it is surrounded by parking spaces, it is near a bicycle lane, near to the railway station and the tram line.
Main design proposal is the partially demolition and rebuilding of the building’s frontage in order to create a dramatic opening that would draw people in. Also, this opening enables the viewing of a new structure in the middle of the courtyard. A concrete core with extended platforms that connect it with the existing building, prolonging the activities of each floor.
The project is an extreme approach of a private and public coexistence, a meandering spatial experience where the spectators are also the spectacle. The existing building is providing spaces for living and teaching, while the frontage of the building and the central core provide spaces for exhibiting, performing and communicating. The building acts as a new threshold to the city, providing a space for public and private engagement.
