Cycling Campus
Reimagining the heart of the university campus to move towards a sustainable future by promoting cycling. The creative reuse of the ALSOP Building aims to provide the facilities for local businesses that are making cycling accessible for everyone. A minimal intervention approach to the existing structure allowed for small meaningful changes that aim to make a big impact whilst reducing the carbon cost of the project.
“A bicycle shed is a building; Lincoln Cathedral is a piece of architecture. Nearly everything that encloses space on a scale sufficient for a human being to move in is a building; the term architecture applies only to buildings designed with a view to aesthetic appeal.” – Pevsner
The modular ‘Bike Box’ became a key part of the design. The boxes can move in and out of the existing structure to activate the public spaces. This creative bike storage solution aimed to challenge Pevsner’s idea of the bicycle shed to create an architectural moment. The boxes can be used for bike storage or adapted into other functions with their modular design. Flexibility of spaces is part of a wider sustainability strategy to ensure the buildings longevity.
