Remembering Traditions

The linearity of the rows of cottages and the street formed between them were key aspects of the site. This should be kept and reflected in the new intervention.

The proportions of the cottages and the street were used to add an education block and an ‘internal street’ that connects the new to the old.
One row of the existing is turned into 9 double story accommodation units, this is done by adding a second floor with a CLT panel construction. The other row remains single story and the slate roof that would have been there is reinstated. This becomes the cafe with the internal walls partially removed to form booths for tables to be placed it. It also hosts multiple exits facing the edge of the site with external seating being placed there so visitors can fully appreciate the views.

The existing landscaping at the site goes from slate debris to woodlands. My intervention equally shows a transition from slate to wood. The slate debris and moss existing landscaping will be partially kept and partially transformed into a slate patio for external seating and a train platform. The first row of cottages is entirely slate and the external street is paved with slate. The next row of cottages keeps it’s slate base and also holds up a new CLT addition. The ‘internal street’ is glazed over with slate flooring. The educational block is a glulam frame with lurch batons cladding it, and this directly meets the trees and woodlands at the rear of the site.
