Return to the Mountain
The brief for the project requires the design of a traditional building skills hub at the site of the Anglesey Barracks outside of Llanberis. The design proposal seeks to maximise vistas, preserve the integrity and identity of the barracks and raise the economic value of the site. The design takes inspiration from the forms of the surrounding quarry and the solid to void ratio of the barracks. The precedent of Renzo Piano’s Office in Italy inspired the idea of tiered spaces that give the staff views over all the supervised spaces. The design primarily uses glulam and timber to reduce carbon embodied emissions and promotes wellbeing through its connection to green spaces.
