Sunken in Time
Through modern technologies, this project aims to generate a sensitive design proposal which respects the heritage significance of the barracks whilst creating a modern space which entirely contrasts with the language of the barracks.
The well-defined promenade cutting through the barracks and the strong repetitive forms create strict guidelines for any visible architecture to be subservient to. Therefore the scheme builds under the barracks, preserving the definition of the promenade whilst creating a modern space beneath the barracks themselves. As well as the sunken architecture, a lightweight glazed and timber canopy has been included within the parameters of the barracks, ensuring that any modern intervention emphasises the importance of the barracks by observing the architectural hierarchy.
The workshops themselves are once again defined by the promenade as they become an extension of the linear axis established by the barracks. Whilst being accessed on the same level as the sunken atrium, which defines the modern scheme, the workshops consist of double height spaces meaning that the exterior can be viewed alongside the barracks, continuing on the same axis. Despite being a modern build, the exterior facade follows the rhythm of the barracks, creating a unity between the modern and the old yet ensuring the modern is perceived as subservient to the barracks by sitting bellow the height of them.
