Lie in Mountain

The project aims to design a skills hub at the site for traditional building skills related to slate. The hub needs to serve both students, staff and visitors. According to the site analysis and heritage learning, the linear characteristic of the site and barracks themselves is very strong and I chose to emphasize this linear character. Barracks have a strong impression on the first site, elevation shows new materials and the old barracks are in stark contrast, not only in the contrast of colour, but also in the contrast of texture. The design of the hub also considered about the different experiences when people walk through the ruins.

The ruins were designed as the inner wall of the classrooms, decoration part of the reception, and private to public ruin garden for visitors to keep the heritage remain in the new building. The whole building is designed in a linear way. When arriving at the entrance of the hub, there are few choices, walk through the door on the right hand and go down to the cafe to relax, turn left and arrive at a corridor which leads to the classroom and then to the workshop, or you can also check-in at the reception to rest in accommodation. There is also a train platform for both people and material delivery. The project represents the aesthetic and physical identity of the area in terms of materials, design and colour. It also reflects specific aspects of history, such as tradition, continuity, remembrance, legend and politics.
