The Quartet Tilt
The Quartet Tilt is a concert hall, an open public scheme where the ground floor is essentially a vast public space, heavily glazed, with a close connection to the outdoors. Above are three differentiating volumes that are held together by the central core, making four volumes hence quartet, and are connected via two glazed atriums.
The central connecting internal street atrium houses the grande staircase with access to the auditorium, workshops, studios and is tilted to allow for an open entrance and to follow the site contours.
There’s a sheltered intermediate external public space under the multifunctional studio, located on the promenade that’s defined by the structural columns and could be used for performance, seating and meeting space, creating a welcoming, communal feel.

The limestone cladding panels create a vivid modern expression against the surrounding brick Albert Dock infrastructure and brings the large volumes to human scale whilst interacting with the building users through creating sheltered external usable space.
The scheme is a performance hub where locals, professionals, students etc can perform in environments ranging from an intimate night-time private vast auditorium space, to an open public exhibition space on the grande stairs, to a more informal daytime space with views over Salthouse Dock.
The ‘tilt’ is derived from the nodal point created from the Albert Dock opening and the intersecting existing pedestrian routes. It allows the scheme to connect with the Albert Dock by creating an open public space between where people can meet, whilst continuing the pedestrian route into the building through the ‘internal street’ atrium, through to the existing bridge which leads to the M&S Bank Arena.
