Over the past 3 years at the University of Liverpool, I have developed a strong interest in socially conscious design – centering local communities within every aspect of my work. People are at the forefront of every neighbourhood and can provide architects with the tools to help regenerate areas; developing accessible spaces and opportunities for everyone and working with Pen and Inc over the past year has furthered this.

Huyton FABRICated is an adaptive reuse project occupying 1-8 Cavendish Walk, Derby Road (the top of Huyton’s high-street). The scheme focuses around the promotion of fabric reuse and recycling as a sustainable and economical catalyst for both social interaction and improving the existing building ‘fabric’. The brief aims to bring back a sense of community and cultural offer to Huyton through a diffuse library space, café, textiles studios, theatre and multifunctional dance studio alongside a new active façade to improve the public realm of the immediate context – restoring Derby Road’s Heritage.
UK households contain around £4,000 worth of clothing; 30% of which hasn’t been worn in the past year and could be donated, providing the area with a versatile resource that can feed into various different activities and skills. A sustainable solution to ‘make do and mend’, contributing positively to community skillset and childhood development.
