Our final project brief was to design the extension to the Weltkulturen Museum (Museum of World Cultures) in Frankfurt. The site is located in Metzler Park, on Frankfurt’s Museum Embankment. The site posed a few constraints which included areas of the site that can only have underground construction and multiple protected trees limiting the area of the site that could be built on. As an existing public park, my key design strategies were to enhance the landscape and public space. The design includes a central sunken courtyard to provide natural light into the basement whilst also acting as public space and outdoor seating for the cafe. The soil from excavating the basement will be used to re-landscape areas of the park. The main building is glazed at ground level to be able to see through to the other side of the park. The courtyard is surrounded by glazing which offers a glimpse into the museum and a sense of openness between the public space and museum. One of the briefs key objectives was to place emphasis on the museum as being a place of education on cultures of the world. Giving a glimpse into the museum aims to encourage passers by to enter and learn, understand and respect cultures and people from all around the world.
