Three Hosts Theatre + Tidal Concerto

The final phase of 2-part project situated on the waterfront of Liverpool docks. This building complex is aimed at providing the general public with a multitude of activities as a way to enhance the area and reconnect it to the city.

The first phase of the project comprises of an interactive promenade space along the waterfront and edge of the site. This space acts as a tidal energy centre with a series of these ‘piano hammer like’ arms attached to floats that oscillate up and down with each other depending on the level of the tide and their specific buoyancy. This energy producing element was designed to provide sustainable power for the second phase. The first phase was also aimed at enhancing the inner dockside where the Liverpool-Leeds canal passes through, and several community water activities take place. This Idea is continued into the Three Hosts Theatre.

The final phase includes a main theatre raised on urban terrace level positioned between three main points for an elevated view across the Mersey. These tower like buildings host different activities for public and private use. For example, a market and restaurant housed in the largest tower. These separate but connected structures explore the relationship between external and internal spaces. This was important to me as I wanted to encourage the user to be explorative, finding a specific spot that fits their needs while maintaining the connection between the natural environment and the state of mind it creates for them. The structure is created from stone utilising vernacular techniques where possible, especially the stone skins of the towers, using a steel structure clad in stone where this cannot be achieved.
