“Toy for Huyton” is an innovative architectural project focused on rejuvenating the town of Huyton, UK, by creating a multi-purpose community and cultural centre. This design addresses Huyton’s socio-economic and environmental challenges, which have suffered from population decline, lack of modernisation, and the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new hub will serve as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for the town’s revival, fostering community pride and positive social change.

The project’s primary objectives are community rejuvenation, functional zoning, and sustainability. The cultural and educational spaces within the hub aim to revitalise the town’s cultural identity. At the same time, the design promotes community engagement by providing areas where residents can connect, learn, and grow together. Sustainable design practices are incorporated to address climate change and promote environmental stewardship.
Functional zoning within the centre includes dedicated areas for learning, culture, recreation, and green spaces. Key features include a library, performance spaces, theatres, cinemas, and workshops to enhance the community’s educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Urban farms and roof gardens are integrated to promote sustainability and encourage community involvement in green practices.

Architecturally, the centre features a modern design with green roofs and a combination of old and new structures. The material palette blends traditional and contemporary elements to create a harmonious aesthetic. Sustainable building techniques, such as a composite planter urban farm system, are incorporated to enhance the centre’s environmental performance and community well-being.
