The general theme for this year in BA1 was Liverpool’s relationship and border with water. This border condition, especially between land and sea, is a prevalent and important context for the city of Liverpool and its nearby coastline. It acts as both the historical backdrop and origins to Liverpool and simultaneously where the future city is controversially being made anew. In a similar way our adjacent coastline continues to be shaped and changed by the passage of time, the elements, human-made intervention and perhaps most dramatically: Climate Breakdown. Our ARCH103 project “Formby: Fabricating Futures’ was situated in this so called: “capricious landscape” and looked to what the future holds for this stunning piece of coastline north of Liverpool.

The students were asked to imagine and develop a distinctive and considered low-impact design for ONE of three possible ‘Programmes’ and ‘Clients’, which relate to a particular ‘Site Condition’ found at Formby:

Bird Hide: A secluded space/structure for the undisturbed observation of native bird and wildlife found in the Woods at Formby.

Weather Research Station: A sensitive space/structure to collect, analyse and research weather data and physical samples; to be situated amongst the Dunes.

Lifeguard Tower: An elevated space/structure with good views to observe the coast and be a highly visible public point of safety and first-aid for this stretch of Beach.

On the Salthouse Dock, students were asked to design an ‘Urban Room’ (a term coined by Terry Farrell in 2014) for Tate Liverpool, to provide a venue for the public to be inspired, hear about plans, discuss, develop ideas, and help shape decisions for the future of the city. The imaginary client wanted this space to actively celebrate the newly developed partnership between Tate Liverpool and RIBA North through its architecture, activity, fabric, and exhibition.

Through this two-phase project students were asked to design an Urban Room with exhibition space, learning space and community space and café and gallery shop. They were asked to choose an artwork from the Tate permanent collection, which many used as a design driver. They explored Liverpool’s connection to the water and the docks: its history, construction, community, and environment, using these investigations to shape their proposals.
