Our Projects and Activities
Practice NORTH projects this year were a winery in North Wales (Semester 1) and a College of Art and Design in Falkner Square (Semester 2), Liverpool. Our fieldtrip was based in Bilbao, Northern Spain. We visited the Guggenheim Museum of Art here and investigated various wineries on a day trip to the nearby Rioja area. All studio members attended a tour around a Winery in Staffordshire on home soil and, later on, a masterclass lecture provided by Stephen Blowers of Design Cubed. Stephen is an architect who specialises in UK Winery design and also happens to be LSA alumni.
We visited the Whitworth Gallery and the extension to Manchester Art Gallery for our Semester 2 project. Building visits were also arranged to John Lennon School of Art (LJMU) and Manchester School of Art (MMU) in order to explore designing educational spaces for the creative arts. In the meantime, our new LSA extension has been under construction alongside existing studio space and has, no doubt, added additional relevance and stimulus

The site for our final project -a College of Art and Design- is immediately adjacent to Falkner Square which is located in the Georgian Quarter, next to the University campus. Designing in an historic context provoked issues regarding scale, repetition, proportion and urban grain. How to design and express a building for creative enterprise on the edge of an area which rigorously follows a series of classical rul es? The brief required 3 main studio spaces, a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, workshops, offices and other support spaces. Early exercises in the programme addressed the design of lecture theatre and academic library spaces in order to promote familiarity with these key spaces in preparation for the main design. Studio members could choose whether to provide studio space for different activities -fine art, fashion, product design- or simply to design all three spaces for the same creative use. They could also decide whether to adopt the Royal College of Art, as a notional client preparing open a facility outside London, or to assume that the project is the initiative of a regional consortium
