Design and Ecological Schools

The design and ecological department exhibits an innovative approach to rock cut
architecture; situated in the existing quarry wall and informed by the existing topography
of the site. The department consists of workshop spaces, studio spaces, IT rooms and
small lecture rooms. The stone excavated in forming the void encompassing the full
height of the building provides stone for the construction of the hotel. The ecological
department promotes research through internal and external experimental spaces.

The ecological school resides here also with experimentation areas inside and outside
of the building. Two methods of addressing rock cut architecture have been explored
with occupied rooms featuring an internal lining, dealing with the moisture and thermal
comfort of these spaces. Whilst the rock has been left exposed when possible, lining it
with a waterproofing sealant.
