Toxteth Terraces

Inspired by the Welsh streets, this project aims to be a modern community youth zone integrated into Toxteth while referencing and respecting the historic buildings that were once on this site. A main multi-use hall is positioned in the centre of the site, containing a double height space with exposed timber trusses that support an all weather pitch positioned on the roof. The hall is joined to the main historic form by a glass atrium that contains a climbing wall as well as the main circulation, including overlooking walkways and an expressed staircase.

This youth zone strongly links with the community art gallery proposed for the site directly adjacent and the two designs work together to create a more contemporary version of historic order. A distinct slice is cut through the two sites and historic forms to create a through route that links the sites together as well as be a metaphor as to how Liverpool’s architecture is being treated today. Especially in light of Liverpool’s loss of world heritage status.
