Studying in Studio Pen & Inc has encouraged me to approach projects with a sensitive, human-centred attitude. I intend to explore the sense of place through historic identity and the opinions of those who currently inhabit the area and use the site on a regular basis.

Ultimately this led to a retrofit of an existing building on Derby Road, intending to be a space for cultural identity and incubation on a currently failing high street. Through careful use of the existing structure and fabric of the building, with new additions alongside public realm improvements which enliven the project, Huyton Bakehouse was imagined and proposed.

Huyton Bakehouse will reinstate the glory of the former village heart by celebrating Huyton’s rich baking heritage and identity, aligning with the values of the original Huntley and Palmers Factory.

Huyton Bakehouse will locate industry directly on Derby Road, shortening the separation between production and retail and increasing the consumer’s awareness of the journey from grain to plate.

Huyton Bakehouse will provide infrastructure to be educated, learn transferrable skills and provide opportunity for employment and business incubation, encouraging both social and economic reinvestment into Huyton.
