“This project is a design for an extension to the World Cultures Museum located in Frankfurt, Germany. My main design approach focusses on a linear block that extends out from the existing villa following a grid laid out by surrounding roads and Richard Meier’s Museum of Applied Art. The linear design accompanied by the existing coach house and sunken courtyard create a central path that extends the rear elevation of the World Cultures villa through the site.
The open, sunken courtyard is mirrored on the opposing side of the path by an internal void housing a ramp guiding visitors through and into the exhibition spaces. All these exhibition spaces sit underground creating minimal intrusion to the park the extension is positioned within. Natural light accesses these rooms through the courtyards and louvred skylights that are expressed in the public space above.

Elevation of extension cutting through public space, exhibitions and villa.
Tectonic elevation and section through public space and galleries.

The main block of the building has been split in two by a stereotomic rammed earth massing and a tectonic glulam massing. This clearly defines private spaces allowing the public to by guided through the space. The materials used for this also greatly assist with my environmental strategy helping lower carbon costs and integrate the building to into the site.”
